What to Pack for a Wellness Retreat: My Go-To Checklist

Packing for a wellness retreat is a little different to packing for a regular holiday. You’re not going to need seven outfit options or a full face of makeup. But you do want to feel comfortable, cozy and like yourself — because the whole point is that you actually enjoy this thing.

Whether it’s your first wellness retreat or you’re a seasoned retreat-goer, what you bring with you can genuinely make a difference to how settled, comfortable and present you feel from day one. Pack too much and you’ll feel cluttered and overwhelmed. Pack too little and you’ll spend the first day wishing you’d thrown in that extra cozy layer.

I’ve learned that the secret to packing well for a retreat is less about having the perfect gear and more about bringing the little things that make you feel at home wherever you are. For me that means a few of my favourite snacks, a pair of ridiculously cozy socks, my favorite essential oils and a good notebook.

Clothing

Retreat dressing is usually essentially loungewear and that is absolutely a good thing. Think comfortable, breathable and layerable rather than stylish. Most retreats have a pretty relaxed dress code and you’ll likely be moving between yoga classes, meals, treatments and downtime — so you want clothes that work across all of those without too much thought.

  • Comfortable workout or yoga clothes — bring enough sets for each day plus a spare
  • Layers for cooler mornings and evenings, temperatures can drop more than you expect
  • Something cozy to lounge in — a soft hoodie, joggers, whatever makes you feel wrapped up
  • A light jacket or wrap for outdoor sessions or evening walks
  • Comfortable walking shoes and sandals
  • Swimwear if there’s a pool, hot tub or spa on site
  • A few nicer pieces if there are communal dinners or evening gatherings

Wellness and Self Care

Retreats are actually a wonderful opportunity to slow down and properly look after yourself — so bring the things that support that rather than skimping on your self care routine.

  • Your usual skincare — keep it simple but don’t skip it
  • Natural insect repellent and sunscreen, especially for outdoor or tropical retreats
  • Any supplements or vitamins you take regularly
  • A reusable water bottle — you’ll be drinking more water than usual and most retreats encourage it
  • Earplugs and an eye mask for deep, uninterrupted sleep
  • A small aromatherapy roller or your favourite scent — familiar smells are incredibly grounding in a new environment
  • Any prescription medications plus a little extra just in case

For Your Mind

One of the unexpected gifts of a retreat is the mental space it creates. You’ll likely have more quiet time than you’re used to and it’s worth being prepared for that in the best possible way.

  • A notebook and pen — I always bring one and always fill it. Something about being away from normal life makes you want to write things down, whether that’s thoughts, intentions, things you’ve noticed or things you want to remember
  • A journal if you have a regular practice or want to start one
  • A couple of books or your Kindle — choose something that feels nourishing rather than just distracting
  • Any meditation or breathwork tools you use at home, like a mala or a specific app downloaded offline

The Personal Comfort Stuff

This is the category most packing lists leave out and honestly it’s my favourite. The little things that make you feel cozy and cared for go such a long way when you’re in an unfamiliar place — and they take up almost no space in your bag.

  • Your favourite snacks — trail mix, protein bars, mints, whatever your go-tos are. Retreat food is usually wonderful and plentiful but there’s always a moment between meals, or a long travel day, where you want something familiar and comforting
  • Cozy socks. Always cozy socks. Non negotiable.
  • A small something that makes you feel at home — a travel candle, a crystal, a photo of someone you love, whatever that means for you. It sounds small but it makes a new space feel like yours surprisingly quickly
  • A favourite tea or two if you’re particular about what you drink in the mornings

Practical Bits

The unglamorous but necessary stuff that you’ll be very glad you remembered.

  • A universal travel adaptor if you’re heading abroad
  • A small first aid kit with any medications you need — painkillers, antihistamines, anything you rely on
  • Headphones for travel days and any downtime listening
  • A small amount of cash for tips, local markets or anything that isn’t covered
  • A lightweight tote bag for day trips or excursions
  • A portable charger so you’re never caught out

What to Leave Behind

Honestly? Most of your wardrobe. A full makeup bag. The to-do list you’re still mentally writing in your head. Work emails. The pressure to document everything for social media.

Retreats have a way of making all of that feel very unnecessary very quickly. The less you bring of the stuff that ties you to your everyday life, the more room you create for the stuff the retreat is actually there to give you.

A Few Final Tips Before You Pack

Most retreats will send you a suggested packing list before you arrive – always read it because some have specific requirements around clothing colours for yoga, or things to avoid bringing like strong perfumes in shared spaces. When in doubt, go with natural fabrics, neutral colours and anything that makes you feel relaxed and at ease.

And if you forget something? In my experience, retreats have a wonderful way of providing exactly what you need. Sometimes the thing you forgot to pack is the thing you needed to leave behind anyway.

The goal is to arrive feeling prepared and leave feeling lighter. And in my experience, the cozier and more comfortable you feel from day one, the more you get out of the whole thing.
